Needs updating for the iPad pro?

With an iPad pro and apple pencil I am seeing lagging and an inability to capture the initial stroke of a line consistently. Even slowing down the stroke fails in some parts of the work surface - "is" comes out as "s" and sometimes even the single letter is incomplete. Disappointing, and certainly no incentive to upgrade.
